TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING COLORS

1. To create a color scheme, choose one main color (usually the color your bridesmaids will be wearing), then select one or two additional colors or shades that complement the main one. Without one or two complementary colors, your decor may become mundane. Choose more than three colors, and your scheme is likely to get confusing and hodge-podge.

2. Once you settle on your colors, put them to good use. Try using your main color in unexpected and interesting places, like your table linens, favor boxes, or wedding stationery. Your complementary colors could show up anywhere from your cake topper to your bridesmaids' shoes. But don't get carried away—you may overwhelm your guests if you cover everything in your shades of Blush and Bashful.

3. Don't be afraid of the dark! Black, burgundy, deep blue, and brown are all great choices that can add drama and elegance to your color scheme. Just keep in mind that dark colors should not be combined with other dark colors, especially for spring or summer weddings.

4. Pink and green is another great color combination, and one that works all year round. Stick with bright or pastel shades for a spring or summer wedding, earthy greens and warm pinks for autumn, sage and dusty pink for winter. Green with brown or taupe is another fashionable, yet timeless, combination.

5. Nearly all colors are complemented by either silver or gold, both of which can add a luxurious, upscale touch to your color scheme. But while metallics are perfect for formal evening affairs, but you may want to avoid them for an outdoor or daytime wedding—they are often too formal for those occasions.

6. Don't forget to consider your ceremony and reception sites when making color decisions. For example, if the church has a red carpeted aisle, you may want to avoid greens and blues.
